Current Projects

Bond and the Gates Foundation

We are currently working with Bond, the network body for UK international development NGOs, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on a project looking into the UK media’s perception of aid and development. Working directly with Bond, our key objective is to create collective messages that best explain the impact and efficacy of Britain’s international development commitments while also helping Bond member NGOs react constructively to critical media reports on related issues.

Traidcraft

Ahead of the WTO Ministerial Summit this December we are working with Traidcraft to bring attention to the continued refusal of the US government to end domestic cotton subsidies which significantly affect the global price African and Asian producers can get the for the product. US cotton subsidies are also symptomatic of the wider failure of the WTO Doha Development round of trade talks which started ten years ago and have still failed to produce any real  results in making the global trading system any more equitable.

Janes Intelligence

The NDP is working on an analysis of Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) in the light of the continued withdrawal of US forces from the country for Jane’s Defence Weekly . Although violence in Iraq has significantly decreased since the 2007 US ‘surge’, which inspired a fragile political settlement that attempted to accommodate the largely Sunni insurgency into the state, Iraq remains a deeply divided and violent country.  Studies have found that 60% to 70% of criminal activity in Iraq is carried out by former insurgent groups or by gangs affiliated to them. This research tests the hypothesis that in the light of the expected full US withdrawal from Iraq at the end of the year the links between Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) and organized crime have become institutionalized in parts of the country.
